some recent stuff from my sketchbooks:

the 3 on the right are ref'd from 80's nat geo

that boy is my favourite thing i've drawn in the last few months, so here's a big ol' closeup:

i really like the feeling of the backpack, loosely drawn but still feeling like a solid object.

i just read a post by Sam Blosma about his process work for his Hobbit series in which he is awesome enough to be showing us the magic behind the finished illos. one thing i absolutely love about sam's work is that he uses pencil in his finals - i love pencil drawings in a way that borders on obscene. check eet out.

i think i'll post some sketchbook stuff this evening.. stay tuneeeeed.

for rego

a drawing after a study by Paula Rego

sometimes when i don't know what else to draw i like to make drawings based on other drawings or paintings. I'm not sure what they are, they are definitely referenced but i wouldn't call them studies because i'm not trying to be accurate. it's kind of like a drawing riff. i like how changing their styles and taking them out of their contexts changes their stories. i like to start drawing them and send them in different directions. i guess i kind of think of it more as a drawing collage: take two figures from two different paintings, put them together on a sketchbook page, and see what they do.

for an assignment we had to design a movie poster for terry gilliam's Brazil. i tried to do something totally different this time, working all art deco to give a little nod to Brazil's art-deco influence. i really liked the propaganda posters in the film.
